Summary

 
A method is developed for estimating the buckling performance of orthotropic shells stiffened with transversely isotropic toroid frames of regulated rigidity based on the linear approach. Relationships are obtained suitable for analysis in preliminary design studies on deep-water platforms with acceptable engineering accuracy. Rational parameters of the frame and shell are found to ensure the maximum load-carrying capacity in terms of buckling. The need for introducing innovative manufacturing and structural design solutions for modern composite shell structures are demonstrated.
