Object and purpose of research. This paper studies non-dimensional hydrodynamic and kinematic parameters of model and full-scale hull and propeller in terms of scaling effects. The purpose of this study is to obtain comparative data on scale-sensitive hydrodynamic parameters of real ship and its model, as well as to identify possible ways for improving the methods of their physical modeling and prediction.
Subject matter and methods.Scale effects were determined as per comparative experimental data for similar hydromechanics parameters of ship obtained from model tests and full-scale trials of a single-shaft tanker with ample lines (displacement 100,000 t). Model tests were performed in two media: water and polymeric solution.
Main results. The study yielded comprehensive experimental data on interdependent scale effects for total resistance, thrust and torque coefficients, as well as for wake fraction, hull efficiency and relative rotative efficiency. It has been shown that model tests in polymeric solution can fully reproduce a number of fluid viscosity-dependent hydromechanic parameters of hull and propeller.
Conclusion. The results of this work enable verification of existing methods for scale effect predictions of certain hydrodynamic parameters for hull and propeller, making it possible to outline main directions and steps for refining propulsion performance modeling and prediction methods. These findings could also be used to check mathematical simulation results for hydromechanic parameters of ships and vessels.
