Summary

 
Despite the extensive experience of ice propulsion performance tests accumulated by various ice basins, no ice models has been developed so far that would be adequate enough and comply with all similarity criteria stated by classic theory of modeling. In the 1980s, NSTU was developing its own procedure of ice sheet simulation based on composite ice (with high-pressure polyethylene grains). However, this model, albeit correct in terms of ice failure simulation, had considerable drawbacks, and the development of adequate procedure for ice propulsion performance tests was never finished. This paper discusses new approaches to ice sheet simulation by means of composite model ice that eliminate the drawbacks of the old model, and also discusses the prospects of the new concept of ice tests currently under development.
