Summary

 
Object and purpose of research.This study deals with shipboard diesel and gas-turbine installations intended for ship propulsion or diesel-generator functions. The purpose is to identify critical diagnostic tasks by analyzing engine service defects
Subject matter and methodsThe input data for the study are taken from research and engineering information available from papers analyzing the operation phase of ship’s powerplant lifecycle, as well as personal experience and multi-year research into reliability aspects of sophisticated mechanical power-generation systems
Main results.The main causes of malfunctions have been identified for ship diesel and gas-turbine engines, which makes is possible to optimize the trouble-shooting checklists for centralized and mobile diagnostic systems.
Conclusion.Latent development of in-service (sometimes hazardous) defects is the main cause of failures and accidents with shipboard engines. It can be taken as a fact that further refinement and improvement of methods and tools for diagnostics and pre-repair inspections of marine diesel and gas-turbine engines will optimize the maintenance efforts and reduce the risks of malfunctions and accidents.
