Summary

 
Object and purpose of researchThis paper studies current status of Russian marine engine building. The purpose is to estimate the capabilities of Russian mechanical engineering to provide engines for Russian naval and commercial ships, as well as for various floating platforms for Ocean developments.
Subject matter and methodsThis paper analyses the state of the art in Russian power engineering for the main types of marine engines (main and auxiliary): diesels, gas turbines, boiler-turbine plants, nuclear reactors, fuel cells and air-independent propulsion plants.
Main results.The paper estimates the capability of Russian mechanical engineering industry to ensure advanced developments of naval and commercial ships in the environment of current sanctions against cooperation with leading foreign companies.
Conclusion.The paper highlights the efforts made by Russia to restore its capability to produce modern marine diesels and gas turbines, as well as fuel-cell based air-independent propulsion plants. Russia maintains its leadership in nuclear power for icebreakers and other marine objects.
