Summary

 
The paper presents the results obtained from application of earlier developed water intake optimization techniques in practical design of waterjet propulsor. A static type water intake designed as a ring-shaped foil made flush with the hull is considered. In the design process the shapes of ring element and recess in ship hull to accommodate the propulsor were determined. It is shown that optimization provides lower cavitation risks, more uniform flow in the impeller disk and smooth pressure distribution profiles to avoid flow separations. It is also demonstrated that the water intake should be designed for a broad range of propulsor operating modes.
