The paper investigates how a stiffened plate fails under local load. This failure mechanism is described in the RMRS Rules regarding ice load calculation. The solution obtained for the failure mechanism of a stiffened plate justifies the possibility of installing intermediate (smaller) frames in the ice belt. The paper also tackles the algorithm of obtaining the approximate relationship serving to determine the limit load on the stiffened plate. The mechanism of plate failure was confirmed by FEM-based numerical experiment, and the findings of the study served to draw corresponding conclusions.
