Summary	The authors carried out the analysis of the state of the Arctic shelf fuel and energy complex and its further development. It is concluded that it is high time to define and address the potential ecological problems due to oil contamination. The paper shows the advantages of laser technologies application for detection and elimination of human impact on the Arctic shelf ecological system due to oil contaminations. The method to estimate the quantitative characteristics of oil contamination by means of optical detection measurements has been presented.
