Using a case study of semi-submersible drilling unit, the paper investigates certain issues regarding dynamics of moored multi-support structures interacting with broken ice. This process can be accompanied by such adverse effects as 1) one or several ice floes sticking in the spacing between forward supports and 2) internal space between supports cramming with ice. These effects, as well as their influence on ice load level are investigated using specially developed numerical model based on discrete element method and describing the interaction of multi-support structures with broken ice. Good correlation between preliminary numerical simulation results and experimental data allowed investigation of dynamics of a moored platform affected by broken ice and obtaining the data on ice effect on the multi-support structures, forces in mooring lines and kinematics of the structure’s movement. The studies have shown that behavior of the platform affected by broken ice is quite different from the dynamics of structure affected by current. Obtained data on the forces arising in mooring lines and shifts of the platform’s CoG with respect to its initial position allow conclusions on selection of the anchor mooring system configuration. The results of this study can be used to select parameters and arrangement of mooring lines and develop the plan of measures on ice management near multi-support structure in order to reduce ice loads affecting it.
