Summary

 
High-nitrogen steel is a promising shipbuilding material, however, its wide application is still impeded by weldability issues. One of the main challenges in ensuring equal strength of welded joints is heat-induced escape of nitrogen from the metal in the process of welding, which leads to poor magnetic permeability of weld metal due to low N content. To develop the methods of improving technological weldability of high-nitrogen steels, test samples were welded as per different techniques and with different weld materials. Then, deposited metal was subject to chemical analysis and the samples were checked for their mechanical properties, so as to develop recommendations on further welding operations with high-nitrogen steels.
