A combined analytical/experimental method is devised to assess the tensile GRP strength in normal direction to the fibres based on tests of cruciform specimens with two pairs of mutually perpendicular slots to determine the layer thickness and tearing area. Test data obtained for specimens of various thickness and finite-element model of the specimen are employed to estimate the maximum (breaking) tensile stresses for the main shipbuilding type of Russian glass-fibre reinforced polyester
