Summary |
Object and purpose of research. Investigation of possibility to reduce hydraulic losses in pipelines with cones, branches and sudden expansions by installation of vortex generators (VG). Subject matter and methods. VG chambers of various geometries were installed one by one in way of sudden flow expansion sections. Full scale tests were conducted on a pipeline section with a sudden expansion for two diameter ratios D/d = 100/53 and D/d = 100/41. Mean water flow speed was varied from 1.4 to 7.0 m/s. Hydraulic loss was estimated in terms of local drag coefficient. Main results. VG gives a considerable reduction in hydraulic losses as compared to the pipeline section without VG, ranging from 25 to 40% depending on the diameter ratio D/d in the entire flow speed range. Conclusion. Variations in VG chamber geometry caused no significant differences in hydraulic losses. For practical reasons an annular chamber of trapezoidal cross section is suggested as an easy-to-make option. |
