Existing methods and solutions for finding the optimum support fleet configuration in terms of functions and numbers are considered. The authors suggest an original classification of these methods based on their mathematical models and level of transport system detailing. Four main approaches are identified: expert/analytical, combinatorial optimization, waiting theory and simulation modelling approaches. Russian and foreign studies using each of the above-mentioned methods are discussed, and their strong and weak points are highlighted. Recommendations are given regarding application of these different approaches to specific types of tasks. The authors describe their team-work experience in developing a software package for agent-based modelling of marine transportation systems and underline that this is a promising method to work out marine logistic solutions for Arctic oil & gas fields.
