This paper discusses damage process of polymeric composite structures reinforced with long fibers and colliding with a rigid obstacle. The paper identifies stable and catastrophic damage and investigates the numerical methods serving to analyze damage progress of polymeric composite materials in FEM software packages ANSYS and LS DYNA. Case  studies  are  provided  for  numerical  simulation  of  a  physical  experiment:  tension of a layered composite sample, with strength assessment as per first-layer and ultimatestrength failure theories. For a stringer web of bottom framing and for various hull elements hitting a rigid obstacle, damage progress analysis was performed, with assessment of average damaging forces and absorbed energies. Validation of the results showed a good correlation with the experimental data obtained by other authors.
