It is shown that investigations of decaying oscillations in two-layer composite structures present immediate research interest. The paper summarizes results of analysis comparing the viscoelastic and energy approaches to show that the former method is preferable as it provides more reliable prediction of damping capacity. A combined approach to calculation of dissipative properties of composite structures is proposed, which can be run on off-the-shelf software without any further development. Results of verifications are given. The paper contains results of studies on how the mechanical loss factor depends on the temperature effects, relative thickness, relative length and non-uniform distribution of viscoelastic material over the rod length.
