The article an improved method for estimating the approximate total ultimate strength of bulk carriers in the empty holds region for the effects of simultaneous bending bottom grillages on top of the wave in the ordinary hull bending moment of these vessels in still water. Accounting for bending the bottom grillages leads to a significant reduction of the traditional vertical bending moment, which is consistent with the result of a complex calculation on the nonlinear finite element method and demonstrate a simple alternative accuracy of the approximate method.
