Summary |
Object and purpose of research . Water level rise over a mast crossing the free surface is studied. The purpose of research is to investigate the model scale effect in tank tests on dynamics of masts with various configurations at periscope depth. Subject matter and methods. Experimental and analytical methods are used to investigate flooding of mast heads. Main results. Comparison of test data with estimations shows a noticeable scale effect in model tests of submarine masts when their dynamic behavior is modeled only based on Froude number. A fairing plus reflector setup enables researchers to conduct flooding tests on 1:2 scale models of masts. Conclusion. Physical modeling of mast dynamics in test tank at crossing of the free surface should meet all similarity criteria. If comprehensive modelling in test tank is not feasible, the parameters of flow around mast fairing should be estimated analytically. It is found that in case of fairings with sharp leading edges there is little scale effect on reflector efficiency. |
