Summary

 
Object and purpose of research. This paper discusses longitudinal hull stiffeners under axial compression and lateral loads due to global bending of hull. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the contribution of various factors to the longitudinal load bringing the stiffener to its limit state.
Subject matter and methods.The task is formulated as geometrically and physically nonlinear problem of complex rod bending solved by means of Abaqus software tools
Main results. It is shown that the solution method suggested in this paper yields almost the same Euler loads as those obtained in the traditional Euler formulation, if physical nonlinearity of the material is not taken into account. Otherwise, critical load is reduced and coincides fairly well with the test data given in the literature. Critical axial load of the rod significantly depends on its lateral load.
Conclusion. The study has shown that global longitudinal hull strength calculations must include critical load calculations for longitudinal stiffeners with consideration of their lateral load, whereas the existing approach to these calculations, i.e. without taking lateral load into account, may bring about a dangerous error.
