Summary

 
Object and purpose of research.This paper studies sonar link for communications between mother ship and submerged unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV). The purpose of the work is to investigate how sonar link could help in making UUVs more efficient.
Subject matter and methodsThis study was perfomed as per system analysis method and efficiency assessment method. A generalized interaction model developed under this study shows important interrelations in real activities of naval forces.
Main results.The model of mother ship interaction with UUV via sonar link combines optimal technical solutions on transmitting large volumes of information and methods of applying sonar-based communications in real warfare conditions. The images coming from sensors for primary assessment are low-quality, which saves battery resource and data traffic. Along with it, if required, UUV will be able to transmit high-quality images in the scope necessary and sufficient for a more detailed analysis.
Conclusion.Theoretical value of this study is development of methodology for data exchange with UUV. This methodology points out how sonar data link could be used to improve operational efficiency of UUVs and, consequently, of their mother ships. Practical value of this work is application of a new data transfer model to a multi-beam sonar link with time-variable parameters, which will be helpful in development of detailed design documents for advanced sonar communications systems.
