Summary

 
A model of continuous medium with couple stresses is used to consider from a different angle of view the issues of shear flow instability in homogeneous and density-stratified viscous fluid, as well as hydrodynamic mechanisms behind breaking of internal waves propagating in stratified water medium. Dynamic couple stress balance condition is used to obtain internal wave breaking criteria including, apart from differential and integral density field parameters, also parameters of the velocity fields in marine medium.
