This paper discusses algorithms and automation of power plant calculations for LNG carriers at early design stages, briefly describing the evolution of power plants for these ships and pointing out three rivaling solutions: low-speed dual-fuel diesels, integrated electric propulsion and steam turbines. Each solution can be implemented in many configurations, so the paper suggests automated calculation of power plant systems at early design systems intended to set the direction for further design. The study suggests a generalized calculation procedure to be implemented in the mathematical model applied in CAD software. This procedure consists of several steps: from formulation of main design requirements dictated by the transportation system configuration to power efficiency of the system consisting of given equipment items with performance parameters calculated in advance. It also points out a number of peculiarities in power systems of LNG tankers that must be taken into account at each stage. The paper also describes calculation software for LNG carrier power plants that is based on this calculation algorithm and implements a number of ideas on taking into account the specifics of power systems aboard these ships. Software products like this, based on system approach, can significantly improve the quality of FEED developments.
