At present two approaches are used to determine exciting forces in calculation of vibrations induced by ship/ice interactions. Both approaches have limitations restricting their application in these calculations. The main limitation is that the current approaches fail to take into account either probabilistic nature of ship interaction with ice or ship hull geometry and mechanical properties of ice. The paper suggests a method for calculation of the exciting forces that takes into consideration probabilistic aspects of ship/ice interactions. The forces are treated as a series of random pulses in time with a random pulse repetition period and amplitudes. Parameters of pulse processes depend on the hull geometry and mechanical properties of ice. The suggested method is compared with the current approaches and verified by experimental data.
