Summary

 
The paper highlights the role of ship’s IR signature as an environment impact indicator. Techniques using remote IR instrumentation to assess this signature are discussed. A shipping passage of the Dam Facility is suggested to be used as a test range for assessing the IR fields of merchant ships. This test site provides repeatability of environmental conditions and stable ship running modes. Experimental measurements were taken to identify the main heat-radiating ship structures and their effect on ship’s IR image.
