Object and purpose of research. This paper discusses ship design theory from a teacher’s standpoint, analyzing the issues that might be very hard to properly explain to students.
Subject matter and methods.This study relies on the findings of outstanding ship designers, such as V. Pozdyunin, L. Nogid, V. Pashin, and others, offering a system analysis of current challenges in ship design theory.
Main results. Advances in mathematics and computers make it possible to rethink such classic problems of ship design as determination of main dimensions and hull lines, development of general arrangement, etc. Nowadays some practical ship design challenges that used to be tedious and time-consuming can be conveniently included to university curriculum. Analysing computer-based simulations, students can deepen their understanding of the ship as a complex technical system.
Conclusion. At present, ship design theory could be deepened in terms of such practical tasks as general arrangement, capacity, feedback coefficients (e.g. Norman coefficient) and modular design.
