Summary

The Russian Arctic Shelf accumulates up to 70 % of total mineral resources. Prospective plans of oil & gas companies regarding the construction of new submarine pipelines including the freezing seas demand enhanced efforts to ensure their reliability and environmental safety. In spite of the state-of-the-art design and construction technologies the submarine pipelines are subject to the risks of failures and accidents. The paper considers important factors which are critical for operation of submarine pipelines as well as special requirements for the submarine pipelines in the Arctic region.
